Contemporary Botanical & Nature-Inspired Artist
I’m a Lancaster-based contemporary botanical artist creating original floral and nature-inspired paintings inspired by the organic beauty, movement, and texture of the natural world. Through vibrant color palettes, layered textures, metallic finishes, and expressive detail, I create contemporary botanical artwork designed to bring warmth, sophistication, and visual impact to residential and commercial spaces.
From modern floral paintings to my signature illuminated tree artwork, my collections explore the forms, patterns, and energy found in nature. My work blends fine art techniques with intuitive mark-making and dimensional textures to create dynamic pieces that shift beautifully with changing light.
Based at the Lancaster Art Vault in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I maintain a working artist studio and gallery where I create original paintings, large-scale statement artwork, and custom commissions for collectors, interior designers, and businesses throughout the United States and internationally.

I earned my MFA from the Academy of Art University and my BFA from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Although my artistic journey began in childhood, I began selling my artwork professionally in 2017 and founded Melissa S Zane Studios LLC in 2022.

Artist Biography
Melissa S. Zane is a contemporary botanical artist whose work explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world through expressive color, sculptural texture, and the transformative qualities of light. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Zane creates modern botanical paintings and high-relief works that capture the intricate beauty found within trees, flowers, and organic forms.
Her signature Illuminated Treesseries reflects her fascination with the strength, resilience, and interconnectedness of trees. Through layered surfaces, dimensional elements, and metallic finishes, Zane creates paintings that extend beyond the traditional boundaries of the canvas, inviting viewers to experience nature through both visual and tactile perspectives.
Zane is an Artist in Residence at the Lancaster Art Vault in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she maintains her working studio and gallery presence. A native of Lancaster County, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.
While her creative journey began in childhood, Zane began professionally exhibiting and selling her artwork in 2017 and founded Melissa S. Zane Studios LLC in 2021. Her work has since been featured in solo exhibitions, national juried exhibitions, and curated presentations, including TREE II: Breath of Humanity at Verum Ultimum Art Gallery, the Pennsylvania State Capitol, and VIVID: Annual National Juried Exhibition of Vibrant, Bold & Loud Artworks at d’Art Center.
Her accomplishments include a Bronze Award in ArtAscent Art & Literature Magazine’s Vision International Juried Competition, recognition in Gallery 4 Percent’s Floral & Botanical Juried Art Contest, and featured profiles in ArtAscent, CanvasRebel, and FIG Lancaster Magazine. Through her paintings, Zane continues to celebrate the extraordinary details of the natural world and create works that inspire reflection, connection, and appreciation for the environments that surround us.
Artist Statement
Design in nature is the foundation of my artistic inspiration. I am drawn to the vibrant colors of a flower, the contrast of textures revealed in black and white, the way sunlight dances across a petal, and the unexpected shadows created by the delicate structures within a plant. The twisting of branches, the weathered burls of an old tree trunk, and the graceful curl of a single leaf all contain a quiet magic that I strive to capture.
I often photograph the natural elements that inspire me, building an extensive archive of reference imagery that serves as a starting point rather than a blueprint. My work is not intended to be a purely realistic representation of nature, but rather a synthesis of observation and imagination—where organic forms are transformed through artistic interpretation.
Working primarily in large-scale acrylic on canvas, I create contemporary botanical paintings and high-relief works that explore the relationship between light, texture, pattern, and form. My Illuminated Trees series reflects my fascination with the resilience and interconnectedness of the natural world, using dimensional surfaces and metallic finishes to capture the movement of light and the emotional presence of trees.
My creative process begins by establishing a foundation of color and atmosphere, followed by layers of acrylic, texture, shadow, and detail. The work evolves intuitively, with each brushstroke revealing new possibilities. Through my paintings, I invite viewers to pause, look beyond the familiar, and experience the beauty, complexity, and quiet wonder found within nature.
